distribute 85 percent of all legitimate sound
recordings in the United States -- they are the last
line of defense -- they are the Recording Industry
Association of America (RIAA). Join us to hear from
L. Carlos Linares, Jr., Vice President, Anti-Piracy
Legal Affairs for the RIAA -- who has been on the
front lines defending his members intellectual
property rights -- a job which has occasionally
meant facing down firestorms of criticism. Mr.
Linares serves as lead counsel to the company's
anti-piracy division, and his responsibilities
include directing the operations of regional counsel
in physical piracy cases, supporting investigations
and prosecutions of online piracy, and partnering
with government and industry relations to create
effective state piracy legislation. At this
concluding keynote session you will learn about the
strategies and tactics used by RIAA in an effort to
protect their IP rights, including what has worked,
what has not worked and a glimpse into the future of
the fight against intellectual property theft.
Bio: Carlos Linares is Vice President, Anti-Piracy Legal Affairs, of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the trade association representing the U.S. recording industry. RIAA members, including hundreds of record labels, create, manufacture and/or distribute 85 percent of all legitimate sound recordings in the United States. Mr. Linares serves as lead counsel to the company’s anti-piracy division, and his responsibilities include directing the operations of regional counsel in physical piracy cases, supporting investigations and prosecutions of online piracy, and partnering with government and industry relations to create effective state piracy legislation.
Before joining the RIAA at its Washington D.C. headquarters in 2006, Mr. Linares served six years as Regional Counsel for the company’s Southern Region, based in Dallas, Texas. Prior to working for the RIAA, he was a litigation attorney for the law firm of Conroy, Simberg & Ganon in Orlando, Florida. Additionally, he served as legislative intern for the Florida Legislature Joint Committee on Information Technology Resources in 1997.
Mr. Linares holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Florida and a bachelor of arts in liberal arts and music performance from Louisiana State University. A long-time musician and songwriter, he has recorded and toured extensively, and is a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. He has served on the Board of Directors for the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition, and currently serves as co-chair of IACC’s legislative committee. Mr. Linares is a member of the Bars of the State of Florida, the State of Texas, and the District of Columbia.
